In the beginning, the author introduces about condition of knowledge that is not neutral but every culture has its own concept in knowledge. This the main way for Western power to colonize Muslim’s mind because knowledge is a very important thing in Islam.
The false concept of knowledge influenced Muslim when their countries have been captured by Western power. Since those countries did not have enough scholars, the Western power tried to help them but in reality, they imprinted the Western’s concept in Muslim’s minds. One of the examples is currency system. The false concept cause Muslim being confused about Islamic concept in their life such as in Islamic economic system. The confused scholar then tend to voice out their stand about Islamic concepts but they actually called the Modernist who make a decision based on their thinking and not based on Qur’an and Sunnah. They interpret Islamic method like ‘taqlid’ and ‘ijtihad’ by their own worldview. As an effect, false problems are increasing and people does not discuss the real Muslim’s problem but the simple matters that have been discussed by past ‘ulama’.
When the false knowledge spread out, arise from it is the modern jahiliya, a group that aggressively defend their stand about Islam but actually their believe the wrong things and try to defend it. In other word, they are being confused. One of the confusion is the propagation of false concept in define some words. The Western people believe the meaning of word or concept change through the ages. So, the influence of the belief poison Muslim’s mind because the fundamental of Islamic concepts is not permissible to change.
One of the importances defining knowledge is because it is related to justice. It’s meaning is not enough with the Western’s philosophers who defined justice as ‘jasmania nature’ but it has more deep meaning as contract between human soul and the God, Allah.
Syed Muhammad al- Naquib al-attas continue define the justice by its opposite meaning that is ‘zulm’. As stated in Qur’an, people can make injustice to themselves. This shows the wider meaning of injustice in Islam when a person not fulfilled the contract with Allah automatically he will do injustice to either himself or to other people.
The other false concept of knowledge in Western worldview is the concept; things always change, and they stated that there are must be changed in value. They not accept the absolute value in their life. Oppositely to Muslim, they are being loyal to the absolute God, Allah, who does not change so the values also will remain same. The constant change shows that Western society are in tension spirit that has broken the contract with God. They try to run from reality and assume the event in human life as a ‘tragedy’.
In conclusion, Syed Muhammad al-Naquib al-Attas stated that we must doing some research on Islamic concepts of knowledge. But, first of all, he remind that the educational system must be restricted. It is because Islam does not open all types of knowledge to everyone. A person must acquires some basic requirement first, such as fard-ain aspect; he must master on it. If the requirement are not being fulfilled, it may cause injustice because the knowledge is related to authority.
